Metamorphosis is a great way to give children a better understanding of the circle of life. The Butterfly Garden is an educational kit that gives the child an up-close experience to see caterpillars change into chrysalides and then emerge as fabulous painted Lady Butterflies. The child gets the opportunity to raise and feed their very own butterflies that they can then release into the wild!
The transformation from caterpillar to an adult butterfly takes approximately three to four weeks. Caterpillars are not included with the pack so you can decide the best time to get them. In the pack there is a card which is the Caterpillar Voucher and on the back you will find instructions on how to order your caterpillars online. There is a small cost of £2.95, (about €3.25), to cover postage. Once you place your order you will receive 3-5 caterpillars (a live butterfly culture) in a clear plastic cup with all the food they will need. You will then place the cup in a safe place away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars will remain inside the cup where they will eat, spin silk and grow to TEN times their original size. They may not start to move for a couple of days after their journey.
After seven to ten days they will hang themselves upside down and harden into chrysalides. Once they have hardened, you gently move them to the pop-up butterfly habitat. Once this is done it will take approximately seven more days for them to transform into butterflies.
The Butterfly Garden is a reusable, mesh container which is perfect for up close butterfly viewing. When not in use it can be easily folded away for storage. When you wish to raise more butterflies you can simply order a refill cup of caterpillars from the Early Years Shop. Caterpillars are only supplied between March and mid-September.
