Do You Have Child-Friendly Policies in Place for your Afterschool Service?

If you have school-aged children in your service such as an afterschool homework club, you are required to provide child-friendly versions of your existing policies according to the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) (Registration of School Aged Services) Regulations 2018. The Child Friendly Policies for School Aged Services (Afterschool) contains these policy templates designed to be readable by children and with child-friendly illustrations:]

  • Statement of Purpose & Function
  • Complaints Policy
  • Medicine Policy
  • Infection Control Policy
  • Managing Behaviour
  • Dropping Off & Collection of Children
  • Fire Safety

These are the mandatory required child-friendly policies. All are provided in Word format so you can edit as required for your service. We now have included 5 printable posters with gentle (but firm) reminders of your "no mobile phone" policy which is essential for any setting where there are older children.

The Technology Posters have also been added to the Early Years Resource Factory and are downloadable for FREE for all existing members. These posters have been designed especially for Canavan Byrne with Early Years Services who have school aged children attending in mind. They have been created using bright and child friendly text so that school aged children can clearly read and understand them.

Services do everything that they can to keep children safe and that also includes online safety for children. This includes policies on no use of phones, tablets or smart watches in your setting. Children need to understand and be aware from the outset what the rules are, as well as be reminded of the rules on a regular basis. It is therefore, always a good idea to have child friendly posters on display in your service so that the children can clearly read themselves the rules according to your technology policy.

There are 5 posters in total:

  1. 'In Our Service We Do Everything to Keep You Safe' Poster
  2. 'Safety First' Poster
  3. 'Be Smart - Always Ask an Adult' Poster
  4. 'No-Phone Zone' Poster
  5. 'No-Smart Watch' Poster
