About the 'Where I Live' Group Learning Journal

This open-ended A3 journal has a cover beautifully illustrated by Oliver Moore and Stephanie Morley. The 'Where I Live' Journal provides ample blank pages to document group observations, photographs, and children's own work. Each child has his/her own set of experiences and individual life story in the community in which they live. The child’s identity as an individual and as a member of a family and wider community is very important and should be supported by the early educator. The purpose of this journal is to document how you support each child’s engagement with their community and their emergent interests.

Features:

  • Open-ended style
  • A3 allowing lots of space for recording
  • Displays the Aistear themes and goals to make linking easier and more meaningful
  • The first page is dedicated to pasting in pictures of the children’s favourite things from their setting and encourages educators to get children to choose
  • 24 blank sheets
  • Provides an excellent record of community involvement for inspection purposes

About the 'Where I Live' Curriculum Plan Pack

The activities are designed to be flexible and adaptable to the varying types of Early Childhood Care and Education settings in operation within an Irish context. The suggestions in this resource pack are just that, and educators will take ownership over the lessons and apply them as they feel appropriate to meet the needs of their cohort of children.

The themes and principles of both Aistear and Síolta have informed the ethos of the lesson plans.

Plans include:

  • Our local community map
  • A personal book titled ‘My home’
  • How I get to pre-school
  • People in my community
  • A game titled ‘Guess where I am’
  • Look who I can be!
  • Group painting of the local area
  • Take me home Teddy
  • Countries of the world
  • Borrow a book from pre-school

We are also including some relevant activities from other Resource Packs:

  • At the Garage
  • Road Signs
  • At the Hospital
  • Town Planning
  • Pizza Delivery

The 'Where I Live' Journal is the first in the Documentation Made Simple series from Canavan Byrne, a series of open-ended scrapbooks to record children’s learning experiences linked to Aistear.
