Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can have many different causes including brain injury, brain tumour, or birth defect. The condition is identified by frequent epileptic seizures (convulsions) that can result in injury.
The Care Plan includes a Febrile Convulsions/Epilepsy Risk Assessment. When responding to a child who is having a febrile convulsion it is important to remember ACTION to ensure the child's safety during and after the convulsion. The risk assessment explains each of these in more detail.
A – Assess
C – Cushion
T – Time
I – Identity
O – Over
N – Never
This comprehensive and detailed risk assessment outlines potential hazards, including ones specific to the sleep room and care room. The form comes with suggestions on “What are we doing already” and “What further action is necessary”. These can be easily tailored to your service with actions added or removed as required.
If you already have the care plan, the Febrile Convulsions/Epilepsy Risk Assessment can be purchased as an individual downloadable document.
