In response to suggestions from our clients we have developed a Risk Assessment Pack to be used with children who self-medicate in school-aged services.
Under the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) (Registration of School Age Services) Regulations 2018, all early years services providing care to school-aged children must register with the Child and Family Agency (Tusla) and comply with a number of requirements within this Act.
Part of this regulation relates to medication administration and requires services to facilitate the promotion of health and well-being by promoting an inclusive setting that will work in consultation with parents and children to ensure the safe administration of medication. Within this requirement there is the option for children to self-medicate with the written consent of their parents/guardians.
This pack includes a comprehensive risk assessment tool and a child-friendly guide.
In addition to this risk management system you should ensure that self-medication is addressed within your Medicine Policy and that you have a child-friendly version of the Medicine Policy.
