This month marks the 10th anniversary of Aistear: The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework.
Aistear was launched after many years of work between the NCCA, practitioners, parents, children, training and education bodies, early childhood organisations and relevant government bodies. The result being a new Curriculum Framework that is unique to Ireland. Within the 10 years since Aistear launched, learning environments have seen a shift from adult led activities with predetermined daily schedules to an environment that is mainly child led, flexible and ultimately based on play and where the learning themes and goals of Aistear are forefront in preparing children for the next stage in their educational journey. Play is central to the Curriculum Framework and is the best way for children to learn about themselves, about others and the environment around them. Through play children can explore many different situations but in an imaginary world. In turn, this can help children to manage their own feelings as well as understand the feelings of others, it can help develop children socially and it can encourage them to be creative.
Using the four Aistear themes of Well-Being, Identity and Belonging, Communication, Exploring and Thinking as your guide you can use the Curriculum framework to achieve the important learning outcomes. Hopefully you have seen a number of positive benefits since the introduction of Aistear and have embraced it in your learning environment!
