Tip of the Week- Water & Sun Safety

Water Safety Week is here and it is the perfect time to refresh our knowledge and practices regarding both water and sun safety. Whether you are planning a day at the beach, by the pool, or engaging in water sports, these tips will help ensure that children stay safe and enjoy the summer to the fullest. Here are three key tips for water safety and three for sun safety.

  1. Always Supervise Children Around Water:

Children can drown in just a few inches of water, and it can happen quickly and silently. Always keep an eye on children when they are in or near water. If there are many children, increase the number of adults watching them. Even if lifeguards are present, your vigilance is crucial.

  1. Learn CPR and Basic Water Rescue Skills:

In an emergency, knowing how to perform CPR or basic rescue techniques can save lives. Encourage family members to enrol in CPR or First Aid courses, especially those who frequently accompany children to the pool or beach, to get trained.

  1. Use Life Jackets and Safety Gear:

Life jackets and other flotation devices can prevent drowning, especially for those who are not strong swimmers. Ensure that children wear a life jacket when participating in water activities. Avoid using air-filled toys as substitutes, as they are not designed for safety.

Sun Safety Tips

  1. Apply and Reapply Sunscreen

Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause sunburn, skin damage, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Don’t forget areas like the ears, neck, and tops of feet. Remember that each child must use their own sunscreen and must be labelled with their name. Some children may have sensitive skin or could present allergies to certain brands.

  1. Seek Shade During Peak Sun Hours

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM, increasing the risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses. Plan outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. If you are outside during peak hours, seek shade under umbrellas, trees, or tents.

  1. Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories

Clothing can provide an extra layer of protection against harmful UV rays. Children should wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to cover as much skin as possible. UV-blocking sunglasses can protect your eyes from damage. Consider clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for added protection.

By following these water and sun safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer season.
