When you consider the service you provide to children and their families, there are many different aspects to running a quality service. You need to provide opportunities for children to learn and develop, you need to provide a child-centred curriculum where the emerging interests of children are catered for, you need to provide a supportive environment for children and staff and, of course, you need to ensure financial sustainability.
One of the most important functions of an early years’ service is to provide safe, secure and healthy environment for children where risk is managed effectively. A big part of this is having good risk assessment systems in place. Risk management is central to the Tusla inspection process and it is crucial to put together a system for risk management that suits your service.
We have updated and consolidated our Risk Assessment forms into one package. Download and modify the risk forms as needed to ensure they are relevant to the type of service you operate.
All services should carry out daily risk checks (all included in the pack) and a full risk audit quarterly of your building and operations (also included in the pack) to ensure compliance and the safety and well-being of all those involved in your service. Some inspectors have requested the full audit to be completed monthly, particularly in respect of the larger full daycare settings.
The risk assessment pack contains forms for audits of buildings including fire safety, access and egress, housekeeping, office and more. Operations audits include accident and incident reporting, general child safety and welfare, infection control, sleep and more. Additionally, this pack includes forms for daily risk checks, forms for staff including Garda vetting, safety briefing template and risky play.
