Developmental Observation Checklists

These Developmental Observation Checklists have been developed by a specialist in early childhood education and care to ensure you have an excellent Observation tool for all children attending early years settings. Along with gathering essential information so that you can meet children’s needs effectively these checklists will ensure you comply with your responsibilities under Regulation 5. They are also an excellent tool for having meaningful communication with parents.

Developmental observations should be carried out alongside Aistear Assessments. For example if you are carrying out a developmental observation each 8 weeks – the weeks between should focus on Aistear Assessments. There is no golden number to how often you should carry these out. The paperwork required to do Aistear Assessments can be found in our Aistear Toolkit . We recommend that these two products are used together.

Developmental observations should be shared with the parents. These should stay on premises until the child is 21 years of age. A copy should be provided to parents if requested- the setting should hold onto the original.

“We observe children to understand and support their abilities within the early year’s setting. Observing children will permit the practitioner to understand, evaluate and perhaps alter the environment & activities to support each child’s learning and development. Where a child may need further support, it can identified early, and appropriate supports can be put into place.”
