March Curriculum Planning: St. Patrick’s Day

March is a special month for Ireland with the celebration of Saint Patrick on the 17th March. The colour green comes out in many forms as we celebrate all things Irish. The St Patrick’s Day celebration creates a great opportunity to focus on the Aistear area of ‘Identity and Belonging’ , where Aim 2 states that ‘children will have a sense of group identity where links with their family and community are acknowledged and extended’. St. Patrick’s Day gives us the chance to explore with the children what it means to be a certain nationality and how we celebrate that within the community. To start your discussion around St. Patick’s Day you can engage with the children at circle time by asking questions around St. Patrick’s Day. ‘Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?’, ‘What happens on this day?’, ‘Do you know what the St.Patrick's Day parade is?’, ‘Are you going to the St. Patrick's Day parade?’. You could have a number of props to hand to include, shamrocks, Irish flags, leprechauns and pictures of the St.Patrick’s Day parade. This will help children to get a better understanding of what it is and may evoke memories of their own St. Patrick’s Day experiences that they might like to share with the class.

Ensure to have a chat with the parents about what activities you plan on doing around St.Patrick’s Day. The parents may be able to share some of their own experiences and traditions with the class from when they were children themselves. If you have parents who are of a different nationality you could ask them what their national day is and how they celebrate it. They may come in and talk with the children and bring some props also. March is a busy month with lots to talk about and celebrate with the children but aside from the main events we have come up with a list of some other interesting dates that you might like to celebrate in some shape or form within your classroom.
